Power Platform in Numbers
If you are like me ad find data fascinating hopefully you will enjoy this. I’ve pulled together some interesting data around how the Power Platform family is balanced and its impact on the relevant technologies.
Interest over time
Source: https://trends.google.com/
Time: 1 year (12/09/21–04/09/22)
Numbers represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart for the given region and time. A value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term. A value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. A score of 0 means that there was not enough data for this term.
Straight away we see Power BI dominates search interest, and most likely use of the Power Platform (expected with its 4 year head start on the rest of the platform).
With Power BI filtered out Power Automate is the clear leader with Power Apps 50% behind. Power Pages only just launched so its near 0 to be expected, but what about Power Virtual Agents. 3 years old and languishing in last.
For comparison Excel and Word dominate Office, with PowerPoint trying to catch up and everything else not in the race.
Searches
Source: https://www.wordtracker.com/
Time: 60 days (11/07/22–09/09/22)
Google Searches in the US, using all recognised search terms (e.g Power Automate includes Microsoft Flow)
Again Power BI dominates, with just one search term (Power BI) receiving 150,917 searches. Good to see Power Virtual Agent ahead of Power Pages, especially with its new launch I would have expected it to have more searches.

LinkedIn Poll — What was the first part of the Power Platform you used?
Again Power BI takes the lead, in line with its expected user base, but Power Apps edges out Power Automate. Which is interesting to me as I would expect citizen developers to find personal Power Automate projects before Apps.
Community

Power Bi with its longer history is in the lead as expected (the community. url vs the powerusers. shows its from a different time). Interesting to see a much more active Power Apps vs Power Automate, and in same vain you can see Power Pages moving up quick.
Market Share
Time: As of end of 2021
Market share based on companies using software
You would think this would be easy, but not only is authenticated data hard to find, there are many different metrics and classifications. But these are the ones I chose:
Power BI
Source: slintel
Notion:20.1%, Tableau:14%, Power BI:13%
My expectations of Tableau leading, followed by Power BI and QlikView and Cognos couldn’t be more wrong. Notion dominating and a very fragmented market. Considering Tableau had a large head start Power BI looks like it will catch it soon.
Power Automate
Source: Multiple sites with averages and classification changes
UI Path:27%, Automate Anywhere:19%, Power Automate:3.6%
This one was tough, as the definition of RPA and Power Automate isn’t clear. With some sites comparing Power Automate to Dell Boomi rather then Blue Prism. In the end I went with the main RPA market. Its a crowded market with lots of new players and UI Path pulling away. Microsoft has a lot to do.
PowerApps
Source: Gatner & LinkedIn
Time: Sept 2022
Outsystems: 30%, Power Platform: 29%, Appian: 16%
Oracle and ServiceNow didn’t have separate Low Code business on LinkedIn
Tracking low code platforms was incredibly difficult, with no available market share available. So I had to fall back on Garders Power Apps competitors and their LinkedIn follows (as that shows how active the developer community is). My expectation of Power Platform domination wasn’t quite right, with a surprise win for Outsystems.

Even thought Power BI is the oldest, it doesn’t have the diversity of Power Apps or Power Automate.

Launch dates for Power Platform
Surprisingly this isn’t as black and white as I thought, as there are often more then one launch date.
So looks like Microsoft has a lot to do to climb to top of the technology Power Platform covers, but there one more graph, and it shows I wouldn’t bet against them.
